Have you ever found yourself thinking, “I’m doing all this marketing stuff… but is any of it actually working?”
You’re posting on social media, sending some emails and running a few ads, but the sales aren’t budging – and you’re starting to wonder if you’re just burning money and time. If that’s the case then this blog’s for you. We hope that it’ll help you figure out what’s actually going on, fast.
Here are 5 simple tips to help you tell if your marketing is actually working.
1. You’re getting leads that make sense
By leads we don’t mean just traffic and likes. We’re talking about real people reaching out to you asking about what you actually sell. If you own a coffee shop and someone walks in saying they saw your Instagram post about the new spring frappuccinos, hey that’s a win. If you’re a dog trainer and someone books a free consult through your site, that’s another win.
You don’t need a large audience. You just need the right people finding you and reaching out. Ask yourself: Are people showing interest in what I actually do, or are they just scrolling past? If it’s the latter, that usually means something’s off – with your message, your audience, or both.
Stop asking “Is my marketing working?” and start asking “Which marketing is working?”
2. You know where your leads are coming from
If someone fills out your contact form or walks into your shop, try asking them (nicely): “Hey, how’d you find me?” It sounds simple enough, but you’d be genuinely surprised at how many business owners simply don’t consider this. When you know where your leads come from, wherever that is, you can double down on what’s working and stop wasting money on what’s not.
3. You’re making more than you’re spending
This one’s big. If you spend R500 on ads and make R1500 in sales, that’s great – they’re working. If you spend R300 and your return is only R150, that’s a problem. Good marketing should be paying you back, not emptying your wallet. It might take a little time to ramp up, but if months go by with zero return, it’s time to rethink your strategy.
Marketing isn’t just about doing stuff. It’s about making money.
4. People recognize you
Here’s another sneaky sign things are working: someone says, “Hey, I saw your video/post/ad the other day, it was pretty cool.” Even if they’re not buying yet, they’ve noticed you. Guess what? That’s branding and a little trust developing. That’s step one in the buying journey. If people are seeing and remembering you, then your marketing groundwork is being done properly.
5. You feel less in the dark
So what does the biggest shift look or feel like? Basically, once your marketing is working, it also stops being confusing. You stop hoping and start knowing. You know that you’re bringing leads and you’re tracking them. You’ve got simple data. You check once a week, and it actually makes sense. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just consistent. A notebook works. A spreadsheet does the job. Just make sure to track what you’re doing, and what results you’re getting.

Bottom line
If you’re doing “all the things” and nothing’s happening, please don’t just keep doing more of the same stuff louder. Press pause and take a beat. Think about it and try simplifying. Look at the results.
Marketing isn’t about being everywhere. It’s about being where your customers are, saying the right things, and getting them to take action. And if that’s not happening? Then it’s definitely time to switch something up.
